The project
What is the project's aim and contribution?
The Sivirú – Usaragá – Pizarro – Pilizá REDD+ Project is an initiative designed to promote climate change mitigation and adaptation, conservation of local forests and maintenance of biodiversity, contributing to Colombia’s social and economical development. This REDD+ project is located in the collective territories of Sivirú, San Andrés de Usaragá, Pizarro and Piliza on the Pacific coast of Colombia. The forests in the area are important nationally and internationally for the ecosystem services they provide.
Project characteristics
Forests have historically been an important source of income for local families, who periodically harvest timber when economic needs arise; because of this the forest had a continuous reduction in biomass.
Changes in Colombian constitutional law in 1991 resulted in the recognition of the ancestral presence and possession of land by communities of former Africans on the Pacific coast, including rights to use the natural resources present in their territories under Colombian law.
This project is developed under the Verra standard.
Verra sets the world’s leading standards for climate action and sustainable development. It builds standards for activities as diverse as reducing deforestation, to improving agricultural practices, to addressing plastic waste, and to achieving gender equality.
Additional benefit
As a result of continued forest degradation caused by timber extraction, many forest areas are converted into agricultural and grazing areas. The project aims to change this scenario by supporting governance capacity, the generation of alternative economic activities and sources of income.
