Afforestation in the Amazon
CARBONO VERDE PROJECT
Amazon Reforestation Consortium Afforestation Project aims at developing afforestation and reforestation activities in a total of 39,150 hectares
in the Amazon Biome
25,000 hectares already planted, 50,000 to go
To continue with its afforestation activities, the project needs to market its carbon credits.
The ARC project will be hiring more than 450 full-time jobs created and over 200 indirect jobs at a local tree nursery, and planting 10 million extra trees.
The activities will increase forest cover and sequester carbon in living biomass, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The project stores an average of 516,780 tCO2e per year, totaling 11.4 million tCO2e in removal credits during the project’s phases.
This project is located in the State of Para, Brazil, and cooperates with the local communities of the municipalities of:
- Paragominas
- Ulianopolis
- Novo Esperanca do Piria
Carbono Verde's design serves 1 purpose
To prove out an economic model to large international development banks, showing that the numbers for mass scale tree planting in the Amazon do work.
Affordable alternative to contribute to reforestation efforts in the Amazon
ARC project’s overall purpose is to develop an economically profitable system that also provides environmental and social benefits to the region.
Afforestation activities come as an affordable alternative to the high costs of native forest reforestation. Although this is not the best case scenario, it serves as a good option to plant trees in the area.
"We are planting trees so that we may be contributing to make climate better"

The project
About the project
The project has been validated by VERRA (VCS CCB 1969) and verified by CERCARBONO (#153). It will be issuing over 4 million credits this Q1 from Vintage 2016 to 2020.
How does the project contribute to the area?
Reforest the degraded pasture in the Amazon Biome 120,464 hectares
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by sequestering an average of 516,780 tCO2e per year
Create massive animal corridors by connecting native forests, protecting many of the endangered local species
Develop an economically profitable system and environmental and social benefits for more than 40 families
The project and the community
The ARC Afforestation Project has a direct impact to the area, not only in terms of climate change mitigation, but also in social benefits to the local communities. The project aims to:
-
Offer training to improve local communities’ skills, knowledge and forest management, with a special focus on female community members
-
Increase employment rates by creating direct 450 full time employees
-
Foster local socioeconomic development
-
Permanently protect the of countless fauna and flora
-
Improve the resilience of local communities to climate change
100% of funds go back to planting trees
The standards
The project was validated and registered under VCS with the CCB label, complying with all the requirements established under the methodology AR-ACM0003.
VERRA is a nonprofit corporation that manages the world’s leading voluntary carbon markets program, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, as well as a suite of other programs, incubates new ideas to generate meaningful environmental and social value at scale, and advances the use of these programs worldwide.
This project is verified under the CERCARBONO standard, using its Protocol for Voluntary Carbon Certification.
CERCARBONO is a standard with a voluntary carbon certification programme that facilitates and guarantees the registration of Climate Change Mitigation Programmes or Projects (CCMPs), the certification of emissions, and the registration of the carbon credits generated by these initiatives.
How does this project contribute to the SDG’s?
By using CERCARBONO’s tool to report contributions of climate change mitigation initiatives to the Sustainable Development Goals, it is determined that the project is aligned with the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement.
CERCARBONO is the only standard with an SDG verification process. The activities implemented as part of project will contribute to the achievement of the SDGs in the beneficiary communities, as stated by CERCARBONO’s tool, with a special focus on:
Support the project to move forward with the afforestation of the Amazon
