The project
About the project
Its particular objectives are: the promotion of natural resources management; the operation of carbon sequestration mechanisms to promote the sustainable management of forests and rainforests; the implementation of restoration and conservation actions through the payment for environmental services (PES) scheme, as well as, the design and execution of strategies to cope with the deforestation problem in Chiapas, through local planning tools and under the Plan Vivo System1, with emphasis on carbon capture. The above includes:
1) Agroforestry systems of timber and fruit species
2) Protection of endangered forests
3) Restoration of degraded habitats
- Technology: Afforestation/Reforestation, Agroforestry, Improved land management
- Delivery: Spot - S1/2025
- Vintage: 2012-2024
What is the project's contribution?
60% of carbon sales resources go to farmers, while AMBIO deducts 40% for execution and operational costs.
Equitable benefit distribution within registered communities, involving the whole family in the process.
Execution of workshops to improve community capabilities.
The project and the community
Scolel’te program has many positive impacts in both the community and the area. The overall project goals are to:
-
The program works with smallholder farmers, primarily in Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico.
-
It focuses on individual or community-level interventions, often under the ejido communal ownership scheme.
-
Direct benefits from carbon sales are accredited to participating farmers, while indirect benefits include training, project participation, and resource improvement.
-
AMBIO supports farmers affected by factors beyond their control, such as pests.
Plan Vivo is an Offset Project Standard for forestry, agricultural and other land-use projects aimed at promoting sustainable development and both local community and ecosystem service improvement.
This standard is managed by the non-profit Plan Vivo Foundation that reviews and registers projects according to the Plan Vivo Standard and issues Plan Vivo Certificates in a yearly manner.
With the income from carbon credit revenue, the project will be able to reinforce and expand its SDG positive impacts
How does this project contribute to the SDG’s?
The activities implemented as part of this project contribute to the achievement of Agenda 2030’s Sustainable Development Goals in the beneficiary communities, complying with all 17 SDGs.
With a special focus on:
Empowering smallholder farmers in rural areas, providing them with economic opportunities and resources to improve their livelihoods
Providing training and educational opportunities to farmers, enhancing their skills and knowledge for sustainable agriculture and local resource management
Promoting sustainable land use practices and mitigating climate change through carbon offsetting
Preserving biodiversity, protecting ecosystems, and promoting the responsible use of natural resources in Chiapas and Oaxaca
